The General Dynamics-led team leverages proven expertise in sonar system design, manufacturing, andintegration to create world-leading anti-submarine warfare capability for Canada.
General Dynamics Canada, Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems, and RaytheonCanada Limited have announced a teaming agreement in pursuit of Canada’s Underwater Warfare SuiteUpgrade (UWSU) project. The team offers proven, ready-for-delivery capabilities that would bringsubstantially increased anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability to the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN)twelve Halifax Class Patrol Frigates.
Under the agreement, Ultra Electronics will provide an enhanced towed sonar system, including a towedlow-frequency active sonar, delivering a leap forward in submarine detection capability. With itsworldwide reputation for excellence in airborne and surface-ship ASW sonars, Raytheon Canada willupgrade the hull-mounted sonar on the Patrol Frigates. General Dynamics Canada will provide thereplacement sonobuoy system and integrate the technology from all three companies, delivering a leadingedge,interoperable anti-submarine warfare system.
The team, comprised of three of Canada’s leading defence companies, brings a unique value proposition toCanada. With a combined employee base of more than 2,600 highly skilled engineers, technologists andsoftware design engineers, the General Dynamics-led team will offer a made-in-Canada solution, providinghigh value jobs for Canadians and strengthening Canada’s intellectual property and leadership in antisubmarinewarfare. The capability developed has proven export potential to international allies making it apossible economic stimulus for Canada’s aerospace and defence sector.

The request for proposal on the UWSU project is anticipated in 2015.
