Ultra CSS sponsors Royal Navy doctor on research trip to Australia

Ultra Electronics Command & Sonar Systems has presented a sponsorship award and commemorative compass to Surgeon Lieutenant Jo Mair RN at a reception held on board HQS Wellington in London.

Surg Lt Mair will head Down Under to join the Royal Australian Navy for six weeks as part of the Naval Review Centenary Fellowship project, which rewards and encourages strategic thinking and persuasive writing in junior RN officers.

Candidates are required to submit a research proposal for an academic paper relating to an issue of their choice that is of relevance to both the RN and RAN.

Surg Lt Mair’s winning proposal is titled ‘Can and should humanitarian assistance and relief work be utilised to our political advantage?’

The award was presented by Ultra CSS’ Sales and Marketing Director, Andy Toms.

“I’m delighted to present this award to a very worthy candidate, whose research proposal is particularly apt in the current political climate,” said Andy Toms.

“I feel sure that this will be a valuable experience for Jo and help shape her future career in the Navy.”

The reception was attended by senior personnel from the RN and RAN, Ultra management and the Australian High Commission.

“It’s thanks to the support of businesses like Ultra that I’m benefitting from this great opportunity to visit Australia and to work with RAN,” said Surg Lt Mair.
